When a grant was awarded to Undershaw for the installation of a new SensoCube, the school had a clear vision for its impact. Now that the project is complete, it is inspiring to see how effectively Undershaw has brought that vision to life—and how profoundly students are already benefiting.

Undershaw’s work is grounded in their beliefs that:

when students are supported in regulating their emotions and managing sensory overwhelm, they are better able to learn, engage, and thrive.

By installing the SensoCube at their Arts and Media Centre, the team at Undershaw has extended the high-quality sensory regulation support that already exists at their main school site. This ensures that students across both settings have consistent access to calming, purpose-designed spaces that help them re-engage with learning. Their commitment to student wellbeing is evident in every stage of the project.

Undershaw is already seeing significant benefits from the SensoCube’s introduction. Staff and students regularly use the space as part of individual regulation plans, and early indicators show:

  • Reduced anxiety levels

  • Improved focus and emotional readiness for learning

  • Smoother transitions back into classrooms

  • Less time spent out of lessons due to sensory distress

The SensoCube is helping students return to their learning environments calmer, more confident, and better equipped to succeed. These outcomes align closely with Undershaw’s mission to help every student realise their full potential academically, socially, and emotionally.

While the grant provided essential support, Undershaw successfully raised additional funds through school events and contributions from parents and supporters to cover the total cost. This collective effort reflects the strength of the Undershaw community and their shared belief in the importance of sensory support for students with SEND. The school’s ability to mobilise this support demonstrates their dedication and the trust placed in them by families.

Before the installation, the Arts and Media Centre lacked a dedicated sensory space—an important resource, especially during creative sessions that can be highly stimulating for some learners. The new SensoCube now fills that gap, offering a safe, immersive environment where students can regulate their emotions and return to learning ready to participate fully. Undershaw has not only improved the accessibility of the curriculum but has taken another step forward in its inclusive, student-centred approach.

Undershaw is exploring opportunities to use the SensoCube beyond regulation, integrating it into the curriculum to support immersive, sensory-rich learning experiences. They aim to enhance communication, engagement, and creative exploration across subject areas, particularly within Arts and Media.

Their continued monitoring of wellbeing and learning outcomes shows a strong commitment to ensuring that the SensoCube remains a meaningful and effective part of their educational environment.
